What a Pre-Purchase Yacht Survey Actually Covers
Buying a yacht in Singapore is one of the largest purchases most owners will ever make after a home. Yet many buyers commit to a vessel based on how she looks at the dock. A professional pre-purchase survey replaces that guesswork with evidence.
This article walks through what a thorough, captain-led pre-purchase survey covers — head to tail, systems first — so you know exactly what you are paying for before you commission one.
The survey is not a quick look around
A proper pre-purchase survey is a systematic inspection of the vessel's condition, performed on your behalf, before money changes hands. It typically takes a full day on site, sometimes longer for larger vessels, and it happens in two parts: the ashore inspection and the sea trial.
Ashore: hull and structure
With the vessel out of the water, the surveyor examines the hull from bow to transom — topsides, bottom, rudder, stern gear and through-hull fittings. We are looking for:
- Signs of impact damage, grounding or prior repairs
- Blistering, cracking or delamination on GRP hulls
- Corrosion, wastage or weld condition on steel and aluminium
- Condition of anodes, propeller, shaft and strut bearings
- Evidence of osmosis or moisture ingress where visual inspection warrants closer attention
The deck and superstructure are inspected for soft spots around fittings, crazing on gelcoat, condition of windows and hatches, and the integrity of the deck-to-hull joint. Water finds its way through the smallest compromise, and what looks cosmetic topsides can conceal expensive structural work below.
Ashore: machinery, systems and interior
Below decks, the inspection moves system by system. Engines and generators receive a visual assessment — external condition, oil condition where accessible, mounting, exhaust and cooling arrangements, and evidence of leaks or improvised repairs. Fuel systems, bilge pumps, steering, and through-hull valves are checked for condition and compliance.
Electrical systems are examined for safe installation and condition of batteries, switchboards, shore power arrangements and visible wiring. On a modern yacht, electrical faults are among the most common — and most expensive — defects found.
The interior is inspected for evidence of water ingress, the condition of joinery and structural bulkheads, and the state of safety equipment. Gas systems, if fitted, are visually assessed.
The sea trial
Numbers on paper only tell part of the story. During the sea trial, the surveyor observes how the yacht actually behaves under load: engine temperatures and pressures, alignment and vibration, steering response, the behaviour of the vessel in a swell, and whether onboard systems perform as they should while underway.
A yacht that looks impeccable at the dock can reveal shaft vibration, overheating, or handling quirks the moment her engines are working.
The report you receive
The survey concludes with a written report — at NTP Marine Surveyors, delivered within 48 hours of the inspection — that records the vessel's particulars, the scope of the inspection, and every finding with a defect classification. Findings are graded by priority so you can see at a glance what is critical, what needs attention soon, and what is cosmetic.
A well-graded report does three things for you as a buyer:
- It informs your decision. You know the true condition before you commit.
- It powers your negotiation. Documented defects are negotiating items.
- It protects your financing and insurance. Many underwriters and lenders require a current survey.
Choosing your surveyor
Independence matters. Your surveyor should work for you alone — no affiliations with the broker, the yard or the seller. Experience matters just as much: a surveyor who has commanded vessels knows how systems behave in real operation, not just how they look in a manual.
